Green-tech's Vole Guards Highlight The Countryside

Last year Green-tech was approached by UPM Tilhill Forestry to identify a product or solution that would protect newly planted whips from voles and at the same time offer improved visibility in the challenging Dumfries countryside.

The private planting project located in Moffat, Dumfries required 265,000 guards that would be visible in long grass plus also easily identifiable from a distance. Improving visibility of the planting would highlight spraying areas for UPM Tilhill’s on-going maintenance programme. The vole guards also needed to maintain their integrity through many seasons and prevent ringbarking by voles that will remove essential nutrients and hinder the tree’s development.

Green-tech took the drawing board and developed a high visibility guard that would offer the planting the essential protection yet provide the contractor with the visibility they required. Green-tech modified existing formulations of plastic guards to find a material that could be considered bright enough to be seen from a distance. The customer is incredibly impressed with the product development and the planting project is currently underway in Dumfries
